Will My Vision be Corrected Forever?

The procedure is designed to be permanent. Studies have indicated that after healing the modified cornea will retain the correction. Many clinical studies have analyzed the long-term effects of the excimer laser on the cornea. Today, most experts around the world are confident that they will discover no long-term problems with laser vision correction.

The first nearsighted patient's eye ever treated with laser vision correction was in the United States in 1987. That patient achieved 20/20 vision following treatment and is still 20/20 more than a decade later.

Will I Need Glasses in the Future?

Glasses for distance should not be required.

All patients who have both eyes treated will need reading glasses from around the age of forty-five, as do all normal sighted people on reaching this age. LASIK is intended to treat distance visual problems, and therefore, you will still need glasses for reading and close work. If you are in your 50s and have a distance vision problem treatment may be available, but don't expect to get rid of your reading glasses.

What is Myopia?

Myopia or nearsightedness is the inability to see objects clearly at a distance. Myopia occurs when a person's eyeball is elongated or their cornea is too curved. In both cases, light rays entering the eye fall short of the retina instead of focusing clearly on the retina, which is what occurs with normal vision. Symptoms of myopia may include blurry vision, headaches, and eyestrain.

What is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is caused by an irregular curvature of the cornea. Images appear blurred or ghost-like because light rays are refracted unequally. In extreme cases, images both near and far appear blurred.

What Is Excimer Laser?

The excimer laser is an ultraviolet laser, which utilizes Argon and Fluorine gas to create a non-thermal, or cool beam, of laser light, which can break molecular bonds in a process commonly referred to as "photoablation". The excimer laser is a very precise instrument that allows the surgeon to reshape the cornea to improve the eye’s focus. A simple way to imagine how the laser works is to think of it as placing the curvature from your glasses or contact lenses onto the front surface of your eye, allowing you to see without corrective eyewear.
